Rhod Gilbert – “The Man With One Face”
// September 29th, 2010 // On Assignment
Myself and Cardiff Life editor Deri met comedian Rhod Gilbert at his secret HQ somewhere in sunny Cardiff.
Deri was there to interview him for a feature in the magazine that also included Rob Brydon who I shot a few days earlier.
The concept I had for the magazine required lots of different expressions from Rhod but he claimed he only had one!
It took a bit of work to get him to show a few sides of himself. The lighting in these shots is really very simple, the photos are all about him as a person and I wanted to show his character rather than just what his head looks like.
You can’t really fake expressions. As we worked I mentioned that I’d heard on a programme about psychology and emotions that apparently genuine facial expressions are almost always symmetrical, an intriguing fact that Rhod mentioned on his radio show the next day.
Just as we were finishing up Rhod’s sometime writing partner and comedian in his own right Lloyd Langton showed up so I got a few shots of the pair together.
